Legend of The Blue Sea: 10 Favourite Moments

I can’t believe I’ve just finished watching Legend of the Blue Sea.

At first I thought Legend of the Blue Sea would be another so-so Korean drama, but there were so many memorable scenes that made me laugh, cry and just pause for a bit too soak in the moment.

Here are 10 of my favourite moments from Legend of the Blue Sea.

Funny Moments from Legend of the Blue Sea

1. When Sim Cheong (who hadn’t been named yet) did a nonplussed stance of a red traffic light man

Her face was so serious, I just had to laugh out loud! Who does that at a traffic light?

2. When the robot vacuum scared the shit out of her

Sim Cheong was trying to intimidate Cha Si Ah (romantic contender for Heo Joon Jae, the male lead), when a robot vacuum knocked her ankle and sent her jumping up into Joon Jae who tried to swing her off very unsuccessfully.

Jo Nam Doo enjoyed the scene as much as I did.

3. When Sim Cheong did an impersonation of The Ring and scared the shit out of Joon Jae

Sim Cheong stayed in a loft room above Joon Jae’s room, and liked to pop her head out of the sliding door to look at him.

It’s really creepy when you see a head covered with hair like that at night.

4. When Sim Cheong worked hard by crying pearls

According to Legend of the Blue Sea, mermaids and mermen produce white pearls when they cry tears of sadness, and pink pearls when they cry tears of happiness.

As pink pearls are much harder to produce, Sim Cheong watched sad shows with a plastic bag to catch her white pearl tears.

5. Grabbing a fistful of birthday cake to shove into her mouth

Sim Cheong is a voracious eater.

Upon seeing the birthday cake that Si Ah brought to celebrate Joon Jae’s birthday, Sim Cheong impatiently waited for the birthday song to be sung before stuffing her hand in the cake and savagely grabbing a huge piece to stuff in her mouth.

You must see how the others reacted. Nam Doo was having a ball, as usual.

Sad Moments from Legend of the Blue Sea

1. When Joon Jae found his mother

Korean dramas like to focus on reunions of broken families, and this never fails to tug at heartstrings.

I completely cried the most during the entire series at this scene; all the years lost together because of the evil stepmother.

2. When Joon Jae hears his father’s regrets as the last words before he died

Joon Jae tried to save his dad from being poisoned by the evil stepmother, but to no avail. Before his dad died, he shared his lifetime regret with Joon Jae about wanting to be his (first) wife’s husband and son’s father in the next life.

But Joon Jae never got to talk to his dad again.

Lessons from Legend of the Blue Sea

1. Life is more than earning money

Sim Cheong was chatting with her new friend about her friend’s mum being too busy to earn money to spend time with her.

Although work is important to survive, quality time with family and ourselves is important too.

2. Sim Cheong explains the 3 levels of love

After learning about the hierarchy/sequence of love from her homeless friend who lives out on the street (as a conscious choice because she doesn’t want to be a slave to housing loans and money), Sim Cheong explains this to Joon Jae.

Too often people get entangled in dirty love too quickly without going through romantic and hot love first.

3. To love is to accept that pain is part of the package

Love doesn’t exist by itself. To feel pain is part and parcel of being in love.

Would we want to hold on to love if we knew pain is involved?

Legend of the Blue Sea is pretty fun to watch, mainly because of Sim Cheong’s strange antics and simple reasoning, ok and Joon Jae if you like handsome, confident men.

It’s not available on VIU app but you can find it via a Google or YouTube search.
